Making the choice
The Feed / Story / Both selector appears on the Facebook and Instagram rows only — no other network supports stories. Each is set independently, so a post can be a Story on Instagram and an ordinary feed post on Facebook. The default is Feed, and the selection applies to every account you’ve chosen on that network.
When Story is available
Stories have strict requirements, so the selector is only usable when the post qualifies:
- Exactly one photo or video — not zero, not several.
- Video must be 60 seconds or less, and longer than 3 seconds on Facebook or at least 4 seconds on Instagram.
- On Instagram, a story photo must be 4MB or less and a story video 100MB or less.
- On Facebook, no attached link — Facebook stories can’t carry one.
When the post doesn’t qualify the selector is disabled and tells you why — for example “Stories can carry a single photo or video” or “Remove the link to publish as a Story.” If you make an eligible post ineligible by adding a second photo or a link, the setting reverts to Feed.
Warning
Your caption does not appear on a Story. Facebook and Instagram stories publish the media only. If you choose Both, your words appear on the feed post but not the story — so anything essential (a time, an address, a phone number) needs to be in the image itself. The composer reminds you whenever Story or Both is selected.
What Both actually does
Both is one post, not two. When it publishes, the feed post goes out first and a story is then created from the same media on each account. It’s a single item on your calendar, goes through approval once, and appears once in history.
The two halves succeed or fail independently, and you’ll be told if the story half fails — the post shows as published with an error, per account, naming what went wrong. The feed post is never rolled back or re-sent because the story didn’t make it; you just post the story yourself. Where several pages are selected, one page’s story failing doesn’t affect the others.
Fitting in with everything else
- Approvals — the placement is part of the post’s content, so changing it on an approved-but-unpublished post sends it back for a fresh sign-off.
- Recurring series — the choice is part of the series; every occurrence honors it.
- Clone and templates — the choice carries over, unless the media no longer qualifies, in which case it drops back to Feed.
- Instagram Stories hide the Link in Bio option, since a story doesn’t drive the bio link. A link you already entered is kept and comes back if you switch to Feed or Both.
- A Story-only post can’t take scheduled comments — stories don’t receive comments. Both keeps them; they attach to the feed post.
